When it comes to 1967 muscle cars, many feel that Ford finally started to get it right with its Mustang versus the 1966 muscle cars the year prior.
However, it also happens to be the year when Chevrolet took it to the next level with the introduction of the Camaro and Pontiac brought the Firebird to the scene.
Not to be outdone, the 1967 Plymouth Barracuda brought a fresh new look to the model.
The Barracuda’s new styling got it the recognition of being “unquestionably the best-looking car out of Detroit in 1967” by a December 1966 Car and Driver review.

The Mustang Experiences New Growth
The Ford Mustang saw growth in nearly every way imaginable in 1967, including its price.
Other than the wheelbase, all dimensions of the car were increased while an optional big-block was added to the mix.
The 390 CID/320 HP Thunderbird Special was available with or without GT equipment.
It was also for just this one year only that those with a manual transmission were marked with GT while automatics wore a GTA badge.
Either way, buyers could opt for LPO (limited production option) with the Hi-Po small-block or 390 big-block engine.
Among other things, the option included a 0.94-inch-diameter front sway bar, quick 16:1 steering gear and Gabriel adjustable shocks.
The Camaro Legend Begins
Dubbed a “four-passenger package of excitement,” the Chevrolet Camaro gained instant admiration when it was released in 1967.
Offering a variety of different options to suit the needs of various drivers, the new Camaro was said to wear “more faces than any other single car now made” according to a Car Life report.
While a budget-conscience model featured six cylinders, options also ranged all the way up to a Super Sport variety with an exclusive 295-horse 350 small-block V-8.
The legendary Z28 came out just a few weeks after the Camaro was initially introduced. A total of 602 were produced that year.
The Z28 featured a 302 CID V8 engine, aluminum intake manifold, and 4-barrel Holley 780 CFM carburetor. An optional dual-four barrel carburetor and manifold were also available.
Pontiac’s First F-Body Hits the Streets
Not satisfied with just the GTO, Pontiac took it a step further by launching its first F-Body in 1967 called the Firebird.
The 1967 Pontiac Firebird made its debut on February 23, 1967, in a big way, with its numerous variations being dubbed the “Magnificent Five”.
These five variations included two versions with the innovative overhead-cam six, a base V8, the “light heavyweight” Firebird HO with a 285-horse 326 and the Firebird 400 with the company’s biggest V-8, a beefed-up suspension, and a hood with two non-functional scoops.
Rated at 325 horsepower, the car was also available with an optional L67 Ram Air 400 with two fully-functional hood scoops. The Pontiac Firebird was the third-fastest muscle car of 1967.
The Barracuda Receives a Complete Overhaul
In an effort to create the biggest splash possible, Plymouth’s design team completely scrapped the Barracuda design and started with a fresh new look in 1967.
The gamble paid off as critics raved about the new style of the 1967 Plymouth Barracuda.
Boasting the 440 Super Commando under the hood, critics described the Plymouth GTX as having “a street engine with racing ability without the problems of the finely tuned racing mill.”
Nonetheless, some buyers did opt to install the Hemi instead. Either way, it was clear that the Barracuda was officially being inducted as a new member of the muscle car family.
